Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
