Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
